The Hazy 'Sis Code' in Mainstream Media

A very certain quote, you hear every now and then. And as much as I wouldn’t want it – it’s usually men who say that. The daily soaps are not far behind displaying this certain stereotypical picture of women, portraying them as the greatest witch of all the time. They leave no stone unturned to objectify women as the mere home wrecker, shrewd and a conspirer.

Whether it be ‘Gopi’ from ‘Saath Nibhana Sathiya‘– a naïve, small-town girl who washes a laptop and moreover dries it on a string along with other clothes. Following the trend, ‘Mouni Roy’ as ‘Naagin’ and presently Anupama the so-called feminist show (not to deny) portraying Anupama as the ultimate sacrificer in order to balance the good things out and Kavya being the ultimate bitch. And not to condemn, these actors are merely doing their job, in fact being evidently talented enough to make it convincing enough. The core problem lies with the scriptwriters, directors and producers who encourage and add masala to this relationship.

What is ironic is the fact that ‘Saas’ and ‘Bahu’ watch the same show together which portrays ‘Saas’ and ‘Bahu’ as the greatest rivals of all the time. While women watch these daily soaps as a mere diversion from their monotonous lives, men watch these shows from a critically dismal yet acceptable point of view. The concept of a ‘typical’ wife or mother gets reinforced which they aimfully believe as well.

Not to deny, there pertains a certain amount of jealousy amongst not just women but everyone as a matter of fact. However, when someone says that women are women’s worst enemy the true essence of their relationship gets ignored. In a situation of hypothetical absurdness and a state of panic and fear, as a woman,I feel safer around other women and not around a mob of good and noble men. I need a woman to accompany me to the loo, to become a companion in the journey towards college, a woman to hear my cries and drop a tear with me on my worst days, to tell me- if I am flashing any period stains and to become my soul friend for eternity; I refuse to believe the same woman could be my greatest enemy. In the case of men, they also need and have friends ranging from different sexual orientations, even in such situations smoke of tension can be seen.If jealousy is an issue, it’s not a sole attribute of women but male sigma too. Where two women can be seen fighting over a lipstick shade, two males can also be seen fighting on a mere football match. No matter how childish this may sound, issues pertaining to jealousy can be of smaller or bigger trivia, irrespective of the gender. Evidently, the misconception of women being shrewd is solely a stereotype. I mean they don’t even have time to look out for their own selves, how are they even going to take out time for plotting against another person? So it’s a humble request, let the reel be reel and respect the real.
